Aug. 4th, 2007

August 4th, 2007 was supposed to be Team Race #9 at SIR in Tucson.  Early afternoon brought light showers and clouds to the dismay of racers and staff.  After an almost two hour wait, we finally sent the first pair of cars down the track at a little after 7 PM.  As the night wore on, the clouds started to return so we were only able to complete the High School and Motorcycle Team categories.  We made it into the semis in Super Pro and Sportsman and the finals in Pro.  The Box / No Box Conci races only made it into the semis as well.

The first race to crown a winner for the evening was Motorcycle.  Jim Burris Jr. took his 2007 V-Rod Harley from show room to winners circle.  Jim had been running 10.20s all night long.  He again dialed a 10.28, but after his perfect reaction time and Greg Lannie’s late .359 light, Jim only had to run a 10.625 at 113.15 MPH for the win.  Greg Lannie’s ’83 Suzuki ran a 9.784 on the 9.62 dial at 138.24 MPH.

The rains returned as the High School class finished their final.  Brian Smedley drove the Sahuarita High School ’96 Mustang to the win over Jeff Veek.  Both drivers left with a .037 reaction time, but Jeff went under his dial by a 10th with a 12.419 ET on a 12.51 dial at 105 MPH while Brian ran a 15.464 on his 15.45 dial at 89.10 MPH.

We also featured a Corvette Car Show hosted by the Tucson Corvette Club.  The Host Club Trophy went to Jerry Daughonbaugh in his 1959 convertible.  The People’s Choice Trophy was awarded to Ken Gerhart’s race and street prepared 2005 Coupe.  SIR also gave away a brand new 10 speed mountain bike to young Adrian Jones.

A date to complete Team #9 has not been chosen yet.  The next event at SIR is the Jr. Dragster Team Race #6 and Big Wheels Race #6 on Aug 11th.  Gates will open at 4 PM.   We will also feature Sports Compact and Street Legals Test and Tunes the same night with racing starting about 8 PM.
