Southwestern International Raceway
Feb. 10, 2007

Warm weather and drag racing will always go together. That’s just what happened on Feb. 10th at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, Arizona. With temperatures in the mid 70’s and a light breeze, Junior Dragsters and Big Wheels Team race #1 was waged. A very large field of Juniors battled through the rounds to the finals. SIR staff threw a Jr. Conci race in so that the young drivers could go even more rounds. SIR also held the first round of this year’s 1/8th Mile Shoot-out Series with competition in Box and No Box categories.

The Junior 8-12 age group finals placed the Phoenix based Checker Shucks & Kragen car of Jacob Valencia against Danielle Trammell from Casa Grande, AZ. Jacob took the win at the hit with a .002 reaction time to Danielle’s 052. Jacob dialed a 9.27 and ran a 9.292 at 70.58 MPH while Danielle dialed a 9.14 and ran a 9.153 at just over 70 MPH. When the 13-17 year old juniors came to the lanes, two previous champions were behind the wheels. As the tree came down, Kevin Dockins turned on the red light by .008 to give the win to Jordan Hart. Jordan had a .037 light, dialed an 8.00 and ran an 8.142 at 79.00 MPH. Dockins still ran it out and ran five thousandths under on his 8.00 dial at 77.78 MPH.

The Conci race finally came down to two racers with loads of talent. Jon Bradford, Jr. ran an 8.287 on his 8.15 dial at 68.18 MPH with a .043 reaction time for the win. The runner-up spot went to Rhiannon O’Leary as she ran a 9.183 on her 9.06 dial at 67.99 MPH after her .092 light.

The Big Wheel final was also decided by a red light when Zane McKissick went red against Cody Thomas.

The 1/8th Mile Shoot-out Series No Box had the bow tie of Victor Sandoval face the blue oval of Matt Hawk. Matt grabbed the big check when he had a 059 reaction time and dialed a 7.98 and ran a 7.997 at 81.24 MPH over Victor’s 081 light and run of 6.706 on the 6.67 dial at 102.59 MPH. Matt dedicated the race to his grandmother Claudia as Saturday was her birthday.

The finale of the day was the Box category of the 1/8th Mile Shoot-out Series. The race was a favorite for all drag racing fans as the beautiful door car of Allen Smith had to go against the rear engine dragster of Scott Stauth. Scott jumped out in front of the wheels-up start by Allen’s Chevelle with a .005 reaction time. Allen tried to play catch up with his 6.451 on the 6.38 dial at 103.22 MPH, but couldn’t out run Scott’s 4.987 on the 4.93 dial at 132.08 MPH 1/8th mile pass.

The next race at SIR is Team Race #2 and High School race #2 on the 24th of February. Gates are 9 AM with first car down the track at 10 AM.
