July 20 & 21, 2007

The weekend of Friday, July 20th and Saturday, July 21st saw clouds and threats of rain from the opening of the gates until racing was completed.  Mother Nature held off just long enough both nights for SIR to hold a “pink” style Sport Compact / Street Legal event on Friday and get in our rain date Team #8 race for High School and Team SIR on Saturday.

The third time run in each category on Saturday was a “Run for the Money”.  Closest to the package in Pro was Marco Otero, Sammy Carrasco from Pueblo HS for the High School class, Super Pro was Terry Markley, and George Berry for the Motorcycles.  When eliminations for Team #8 got underway, the High School finalists had a bit of fun with their race cars.  Brittnee Toia and current champ Matt Hawk swapped cars.  Matt drove Brittnee’s ’64 Chevy II while Brittnee drove Matt’s 2002 Ford Explorer.  Matt came out victorious when he had a .034 light and ran a 15.394 on his 15.29 dial.  Brittnee ran closer to her 16.83 dial with a 16.849 at 81.06 MPH, but had a .135 reaction time.

Steve Richardson’s black primered El Camino and the ’77 olds Cutlass of Jim Mulcahy made up the Sportsman final.  The match-up was over at the start when Steve turned on the red light by .032.  Jim took the win with a .109 light and ran under his 13.66 dial with a 13.630 at 96.78 MPH on the free time run.

Jason Riker came up from St. David to go to victory lane in Pro.  Jason had to face the beautiful purple ’70 Chevelle owned and driven by Larry Cannon.  Larry took to much stripe to give the win to Jason’s ’64 Falcon.  Jason had a .029 light and ran an 11.886 at 112.23 MPH on his 11.86 dial.  Larry was just a little late with a .104 reaction time and ran an 11.140 at 118.90 MPH on his 11.18 dial.

The Motorcycle team has become one of the most competitive with all racers running the numbers and good on the tree.  Tom Lannie was the victor with a .054 light and 9.536 at 125.92 MPH on his 9.47 dial over Jim Burris Jr. when Jim had an unusual .144 light.  Jim ran a 10.163 at 135.06 MPH on the 10.15 dial.

Super Pro was a battle between the two time track champion (05 and 06), Bill Kidd and his ’27 Ford Roadster against the multi-time winner Chuck Hawk Jr. in his Ford powered R.E.D.   Chuck took the hole shot victory to the closest race of the weekend over Bill.  Bill ran on his dial with a 4 at 151.36 MPH, but Chuck had a .001 light and ran 7.610 on his 7.60 dial.  Bill’s runner-up spot was a 36 hundredths package that would have been first any other time.  Bill had a .032 light and ran an 8.784 at 151.36 MPH on the 8.78 dial.

The last two races of the evening were the Box and No Box Concis.  Cindy Hawk was almost as close as husband Chuck at the start when she tipped Rodney Ward’s ’64 Chevy pick-up for the Box Conci win.  Cindy left with a three hundredths advantage on the .011 light to Rodney’s .041.  She dialed an 8.23 and ran an 8.284 at 136.50 MPH while Rodney dialed an 11.77 and ran an 11.825 at 125.62 MPH.

The No Box Conci went to Rubin Arrieta in his big block ’74 Camaro when Carlos Carrillo turned on the red light by .035 in his ’70 Dodge Dart.  Rubin had a .220 reaction time and a 10.655 on his 10.58 dial at 127.81 MPH while Carlos dialed an 11.68 and ran an 11.620 at 113.63 MPH after the red light start.

The next races at SIR are an Open Test and Tune on Friday, Aug 3rd and Team Race #9 on Saturday Aug. 4th.  Gates both days are at 4 PM and our new lower spectator admission is $5.00.
