Top Comp, two money bracket races and a Street Legal Drags made up the action packed night at Southwestern International Raceway on May 12, 2007. The largest bracket category was the non-electronics where it took five tough rounds for James Sorensen Jr. to top Matt Hawk. James dialed his ’73 Nova to an 11.56 and although he was a little late at the tree with a .166 reaction time, he ran an 11.586 at 114.74 MPH. The runner-up, Matt Hawk, had a better reaction time of .047, but the ’70 Maverick only ran a 12.730 on the 12.57 dial at 88.76 MPH.

In the electronics category, Jay Axtell grabbed the big check with a beautiful .002 light when his boss, Don Toia left before the third amber came on. Jay opened up the rear engine dragster and ran an 8.065 on his 8.08 dial at 161.75 MPH. Toia coasted to a 14.028 at 58.36 MPH after the red light start in his ’27 Ford Roadster.

Another family member of the Hawk family racing team was in the Top comp final. This time Brad Hawk, driving his mom, Cindy Hawk’s rear engine dragster was the victor. Brad ran against Tucson Dragway past champion Dan Rusk. Dan went red by .017 as Brad dialed an 8.35 and then ran on his number with a 9 at 155.24 MPH. After a .050 reaction time, Dan still ran a 7.141 at 180.74 MPH on his 7.12 dial for the number two spot in his rear engine Ken Cox Dragster.

The SIR crew then opened the staging lanes to almost 200 Street Legal cars from 10 PM to 1 AM Sunday morning. Hundreds of spectators watched friends and family grudge match and challenge others to safe and legal on the strip drag racing.

The next event at SIR is May 25, 26, and 27 where we will feature California Independent Funny Cars. Friday night is an open Test and Tune with gates at 4 PM. On Saturday a highlighted addition to our races is the first of two Big Bucks Bracket Races and our Jr. Dragsters Team Race #4. Sunday will contain the second of our weekend Big Buck Bracket Races. Gates on both Saturday and Sunday are at noon.
